Madhya Pradesh among top three states for girls 'out-of-school'

Despite offering freebies like books, bicycle and uniforms along with scholarships among others to enhance enrollment, Madhya Pradesh is among the top three states in the country where the percentage of out-of-school girls is the highest, according to an education status report for 2016.

As per the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2016, in some states, the proportion of girls (age group 11-14) ‘out-of-school’ remains greater than 8 percent. These states are Uttar Pradesh (9.9 per cent) and Rajasthan (9.7 per cent). Madhya Pradesh joined them at 8.5 per cent.

This report was released recently in New Delhi by Pratham Education Foundation.

“The proportion of ‘out-of-school’ girls (not dropouts but who never went to school) in Madhya Pradesh was at 6.2 per cent during 2014. This has now increased to 8.5 per cent,” Foundation’s MP Chief Sajjan Singh Shekhawat told PTI.

There are about 1.22 lakh schools including 83962 of primary level, 30449 middle, 3849 higher secondary and 4764 of high schools in Madhya Pradesh.

Indian universities will need top ratings for foreign collaborations

Universities seeking twinning programmes with foreign academic institutes now need top accreditation grades and approvals from regulatory agencies.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently issued regulations on the collaborations, although the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had in place provisions for such tie-ups. Through these collaborations universities aim to increase synergy between Indian and foreign academic institutions, improve their curriculum, delivery of knowledge and educational content. Students also get additional choices.

The UGC (Promotion and Maintenance of Standards of Academic Collaboration between Indian and Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations 2016, say that Indian universities and colleges with the highest grade of accreditation and those conforming to other eligibility conditions laid down in the regulations can apply online to the UGC to start twinning arrangements with foreign educational institutions (FEIs).

AICTE regulations for technical twinning programme require an Indian university department or institution to have a valid National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accreditation for one year beyond April 10, 2017 for the course in which it seeks twinning. No foreign universities and institutions can carry out any educational activity in India to award programmes (diploma, postgraduate diploma, degree, postgraduate degree, postgraduate diploma, doctoral) without specific approval from AICTE.

UAE plans medical research centre

Shortage of human resources in the medical field and lack of research is a source of concern in the country and globally, as well, said the UAE's Minister of Health and Prevention, Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais. He said this not only includes physicians, but all technical staff in the medical field.

While speaking at a session titled Future of Healthcare, a Minister's Point of View at the Dubai Health Forum on Monday, the minister said the issue had been raised at the Sir Baniyas ministers' retreat a few years ago.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai also attended the forum.

We spoke about two sectors in this retreat - education and health - and lack of research was a major topic of discussion, said Al Owais. However, he added that from 2007 to 2016, research and studies had gone up four times. "This is a qualitative leap."

World Book Fair 2017

The World Book Fair, the largest event of its kind in the country, will be held between January 7-15 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

The 44th edition of the book fair will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education) Mahendra Nath Pandey, organiser National Book Trust said in a statement on January 4.

The nine-day event will promote the rich Indian heritage through music and dance performances and is expected to host 1,500 participants from across India, including over 50 foreign exhibitors.

More than 2,500 stalls will showcase books and reading material in Hindi, English and other Indian languages for all age groups, on a wide range of subjects and genre.

The highlight of the fair will be on January 10 when publishers from India, Germany and France will talk about markets, trends and collaborations in a session and will showcase their book market scenario at the event.

Maharashtra plans to train weak students under Rapid Education

In an attempt to help academically weak students and put an end to the practice of schools failing such students in Class IX in order to achieve a cent per cent pass result in the Class X board exams, the state government will introduce its ‘Rapid Education’ initiative.

The move has been initiated following a state government report that said over 1.5 lakh students failed in Class IX in April 2016.

The state school education department has sought a list of Class IX students who failed in the exams in April and October 2016 and also of those who secured less than 45 per cent in the midterm exam. The class teachers are expected to prepare the list before implementing the Rapid Education initiative. For students who secured less than 45 per cent, the education department suggested, the method of Experience, Reflection, Application and Consolidation (ERAC) would be adopted.

“In these two methods, the teachers are expected to divide activities over a period of two months in which 15 days can be dedicated to identifying the weakness of each student and application of teaching methods to overcome these weakness. Another 30 days can then be utilised for self-study and the remaining 15 days for problem-solving, among others,” said Nand Kumar, Principal Secretary, School Education and Sports.
