Celebrating 200 years of Tamil Education in Malaysia

Tamil language education in Malaysia will be 200 years old this year and the Government is not about to let it go unnoticed. Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said various events would be held to commemorate this milestone that can trace its roots to Penang Free School, which hosted the first Tamil language class on Oct 21, 1816.

We should celebrate this because, as far as I know, there isn’t any other country in this region that has a Tamil vernacular school system, he told a press conference yesterday.

Kamalanathan said Tamil language education had made great strides in this country. Last time, we were ‘importing’ Tamil teachers and syllabus from India but today, the Swiss Education Ministry is using Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris’ Bachelor in Education (Tamil Language) as a qualification criterion for Tamil teachers in Switzerland, he added.

Singapore recognises more degrees from Australia under new agreement

More degrees from Australia and Singapore universities will be recognised under a new agreement to strengthen the partnership between both countries. Key among the moves is the recognition of the Juris Doctor (JD) degrees awarded by the 10 Australian universities, which have already been approved for their law degrees.

Likewise, Australia will recognise the undergraduate and JD law degrees of Singapore universities, subject to applicable conditions in the Singapore-Australia Free Trade Agreement. The JD programme is a post graduate course after doing a bachelor's degree in some other discipline.

University of Dubai offers 50pc fee cut for top students

University of Dubai has announced a unique scholarship plan offering 50 per cent discount on tuition fees for undergraduate courses to outstanding national and international students.

Students must score 90 per cent and above in their high school exams to qualify for the scholarship.

Announcing the scheme during an academic meeting at the University of Dubai, Dr Eesa M. Bastaki, president of the university, said: “In pursuit of quality and as part of our efforts to transform Dubai as the hub of international education, UD is granting 50 per cent discount on its tuition fees to national and international students who will be an added value to quality education in UAE.”

Apple Music Student Discount

Apple Music subscriptions will be $4.99 a month for students, half the normal price.

College students drawn to Spotify because of its education discount can now consider Apple Music as a viable option too.

Apple will begin offering college students a reduced price membership to its streaming music app, TechCrunch reports. The discounted membership will cost $4.99 per month in the U.S. instead of $9.99. That’s the same amount Spotify charges students for access to its ad-free Premium service.

Schools collaborate with parents for better quality of education

In an effort to boost the interest of students in school activities, some city schools are collaborating with parents to organise events, talks and interest groups. The school authorities say by involving parents, they are able to get a better understanding of students and a chance to bond with them.

GD Goenka Public School, Sector 48, organised several extracurricular activities and value education sessions for students and parents. One such session, ‘Sangeet for all’, gave parents and their children an opportunity to celebrate music together. The parents, in groups of five, participated in the music classes of students.

In another programme specifically organised for class 11 students, parents from different professions were asked to come and talk about their work life and their experience with children. The school said it helped students in getting first-hand information about different work profiles.
